Gatic Kerbdrain from Alumasc Water Management Solutions (AWMS) is performing to its full potential as part of a new road layout in Edinburgh. Longstone Road had been experiencing a number of traffic challenges which demanded an upgrade of the existing local infrastructure, including the busy roundabout.

Main contractor on the scheme, Luddon Construction, has a well-established and successful relationship with Scotia Supply Co., who had recently become an approved supplier of Gatic Kerbdrain. Dave Kelly of Scotia, was impressed by the product and was instrumental in its successful specification to Luddon for the Longstone Road project.

The roundabout presented several challenges, including the demand for a large number of internal and external radial sections of varying degrees. Not only were these sections possible using Kerbdrain, but stocks were also readily available, enabling fast delivery to site, and ensuring all deadlines were met.

Dave Kelly comments:

“Having seen Gatic Kerbdrain at work in other successful applications, I was keen to become a supplier. My order of stock from Gatic was timely, as it coincided with our involvement with Luddon Construction on the Longstone Road regeneration. We were able to quickly add enough stock for the project onto our original order, securing fast delivery straight to site. The nature of the product also meant that it could be cut easily to accommodate the curvature.”

Gatic Kerbdrain is a heavy-duty combined kerb and drainage system (CKD) that provides an efficient and safe method of drainage on potentially any surface or structure with a kerb edge. It moves away from the concept of two-part systems by offering a single, solid, monolithic system. Not only do these single units negate the need for costly handling equipment, they also present exceptionally quick installation times whilst reducing the risk of personal injury.

Environmental Credentials

In addition to price and availablity, Gatic Kerbdrain also addressed the enviromental considerations of the Longstone Road project. Kerbdrain is manufactured using 70% recycled polymers, with every 500mm unit deriving from 199 plastic bottles, caps and closures. The result is a product offering exceptional strength (compliant with BS EN 1433:2002 Group 3 kerbside installations) and improved impact resistance providing it is installed in accordance with Gatic's installation details. End-of-life units are 100% recyclable.

Dave Kelly concludes:

“The specification of Gatic Kerbdrain at Longstone Road has not only delivered in terms of product performance, but it has showcased the reliability and expertise provided by the Gatic technical team. More projects are in the pipeline, and both Luddon Construction and our team here at Scotia will look forward to working with Gatic again in the future.”

Kerbdrain is part of the Gatic civil drainage systems range, which, for more than 90 years, has been used to capture, control and return run-off safely into the natural water cycle, contributing directly to wider sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS). It is commonly used in retail parks, drive-throughs, distribution yards, along highways and motorways, and within residential housing developments.
